6 Attach the box sides. You will sew the appliqué squares to the bottom square to form the outer box. The trick to sewing a perfect box is to avoid stitching through the side seam allowances so there is fabric to sew the corners later. When attaching the squares, start sewing ½" (1.5cm) from the side of the squares and stop ½" (1.5cm) from the other side. To start, place an appliqué square and the blank background fabric square together with right sides facing. Stitch them together along the bottom edge, starting and stopping ½" (1.5cm) from each side. Repeat to attach the other three appliqué squares to the remaining edges of the bottom square.
